i have been invited to participate in a group exhibition at techno park studios - a gallery in williamstown.
this provides a great opportunity to create some new work. the last series of work i produced was a set of large abstract ink drawings, so for this exhibition i've decided to return to sculpture.
the gallery is situated in an area of williamstown that was once a casuarina (she-oak) forest, so i thought i would explore an idea of trees.
i found some great cut logs not far from my home, and although not from casuarina trees specifically, they evoke a sense of general 'tree-ness' and as a product of European introduction they also evoke ideas of our cultural construction of nature.
this is the first part of the artwork's construction in the studio:

the intention is to sink mirrors into these depressions in the logs. the smaller branches on the floor of the studio will be cut into smaller segments and will also have mirrors inserted into the exposed interiors. these smaller segments will be bundled together with rope.
